Asbury Park, NJ (March 3, 2025) – One person was injured in an overnight fire that broke out at the former Holy Spirit Church on Second Avenue near Main Street early Monday morning.
According to Asbury Park Fire Chief Kevin Keddy, the fire started at approximately 12:20 a.m. in the rectory building of the now-closed church. Flames and thick smoke quickly spread to the attic, requiring firefighters to work throughout the night to extinguish the blaze and check for lingering hotspots.
Emergency responders transported an injured man to a local hospital for evaluation. Authorities confirmed that he was alert at the time of transport, but further details on his condition have not been released.
Officials noted that no one was authorized to be inside the building, which has been fenced off since the church’s closure in 2021. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Our thoughts are with the injured individual, and we hope for a full recovery.
Fire Hazards in Vacant Buildings in New Jersey
Fires in vacant or abandoned buildings pose significant risks to both emergency responders and the surrounding community. Structures like the former Holy Spirit Church in Asbury Park are often vulnerable to fires due to deteriorating conditions, potential trespassing, and electrical hazards.
Abandoned properties can become targets for vandalism, unauthorized entry, and unsafe heating methods, all of which increase the likelihood of accidental or intentional fires. When a fire occurs in such buildings, firefighters often face additional challenges, including unstable structures and limited access points.
Authorities encourage property owners and municipalities to take preventative measures, such as securing vacant structures, improving surveillance, and ensuring fire prevention systems are maintained. In addition, residents should report any signs of trespassing or suspicious activity near abandoned buildings to local officials.
