Gaston County, NC (March 3, 2025) – An 82-year-old woman tragically lost her life in a house fire Sunday evening in Gaston County, according to local emergency officials.
Fire crews responded to the 800 block of Alexis High Shoals Rd shortly after 7 p.m. Upon arrival, they found the home nearly engulfed in flames, with over 75 percent of the structure consumed. Firefighters worked quickly to bring the blaze under control, managing to do so by approximately 7:30 p.m.
One individual outside the home sustained minor injuries while attempting to rescue the elderly woman. They were treated at the scene for their injuries, but unfortunately, the woman was pronounced dead.
The Gaston County Office of Emergency Management and Fire Services determined that the fire originated in the living room, likely caused by combustible items placed too close to a space heater. Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
House Fires and Safety in North Carolina
House fires remain a major concern in North Carolina, particularly during colder months when space heaters and other heating devices are in frequent use. Fires caused by heating equipment are often preventable, yet they continue to result in significant property damage, injuries, and fatalities across the state.
Officials urge residents to follow key fire safety measures, such as keeping flammable materials away from heating sources, ensuring smoke detectors are functional, and having an emergency escape plan in place. Many home fire deaths occur due to smoke inhalation or delayed evacuation, making it critical to stay vigilant about fire prevention.
In the aftermath of a fire, survivors and victims’ families may struggle with emotional and financial hardships, including property loss and medical expenses. Seeking support and understanding the available recovery options can help those affected navigate such difficult circumstances.
