Carter County, TN (March 1, 2025) – A tragic head-on collision on Mary Patton Highway near Big Springs Rd on Thursday evening left two people dead and another injured, according to reports from the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP).
The accident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. when a 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche traveling along Mary Patton Highway reportedly crossed the double yellow line into the southbound lane, directly into the path of a 2016 Nissan Versa. In an attempt to avoid the crash, the Nissan swerved to the right shoulder. However, the Chevrolet struck the Nissan head-on, causing it to hit a guardrail before coming to a stop on the northbound shoulder. The Chevrolet continued off the roadway, overturning multiple times before coming to rest.
Emergency responders were quick to the scene, providing care to the injured victims. The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as Thomas Whittington, 47, of North Carolina, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Nissan’s passenger, Christina Presnell, 53, of Tennessee, also sustained fatal injuries. The driver of the Nissan was injured in the crash and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
