St. Albans, VT (February 28, 2025) – A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 89 South caused significant traffic delays Thursday morning, leaving three people injured and prompting road closures for several hours.
Vermont State Police responded to the crash around 7:30 a.m., where six vehicles were involved in a chain-reaction collision on the southbound side of I-89. Emergency responders transported three individuals to Northwestern Medical Center for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed.
Approximately one mile north of the initial crash, a second collision involving a commercial vehicle caused further traffic congestion. Officials reported that a tractor-trailer carrying frozen food lost control due to slick road conditions, striking three vehicles and triggering a secondary crash involving a fourth motorist. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this incident.
Both northbound and southbound lanes of I-89 were affected, with full reopening occurring at 11:30 a.m. Authorities confirmed that snowfall and icy road conditions contributed to the crashes and urged drivers to exercise caution when traveling in winter weather.
Our thoughts are with those injured, and we hope for their full recovery.
Winter Road Safety in Vermont
Snow and ice-covered roads significantly increase the risk of multi-vehicle collisions, especially on high-speed roadways like I-89. Reduced traction, limited visibility, and sudden braking can lead to dangerous crashes, particularly when multiple vehicles are involved.
Vermont drivers are encouraged to take extra precautions during winter weather, including reducing speed, maintaining a safe following distance, and ensuring their vehicles are equipped with proper tires for icy conditions. Large trucks, like the tractor-trailer involved in this incident, require even greater stopping distances, making it crucial for all motorists to remain aware of surrounding traffic.
For those injured in winter road accidents, seeking medical attention and understanding legal options are important steps in recovery.
