Lincoln, NE (February 27, 2025) – A 15-year-old boy suffered serious injuries after being struck by a van at the intersection of 48th Street and Cornhusker Highway on Wednesday afternoon. The accident occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m., prompting an emergency response from Lincoln Fire and Rescue.
Upon arrival, paramedics treated the teen at the scene before transporting him to Bryan Health West Campus. Authorities confirmed that he sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The white van involved in the crash sustained front-end damage, and a shoe belonging to the victim was found in the roadway.
According to the Lincoln Police Department’s crash report, the van was traveling westbound through the intersection when the collision occurred. The driver, a woman, reportedly could not see the teen due to another vehicle in the left-turn lane blocking her view. Witnesses told police that the teen had been standing on the median and attempted to cross when the light turned green. However, he did not yield to the van, which had the right of way.
The impact threw the teen across the intersection before both he and the van came to a stop on the west side. Witnesses estimated the van’s speed between 40 and 45 mph at the time of the collision. Southbound 48th Street north of Cornhusker Highway was temporarily closed while police conducted their investigation.
Authorities continue to review the incident, and further updates will be provided as available.
Our thoughts are with the injured teen, and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.
Pedestrian Accidents in Nebraska
Pedestrian accidents, especially those involving high-speed roadways like Cornhusker Highway, often result in severe injuries due to the force of impact. Intersections with multiple lanes and turn signals can create dangerous situations when visibility is obstructed or right-of-way misunderstandings occur.
According to traffic safety data, pedestrian crashes frequently happen when individuals cross against the signal, when drivers fail to notice pedestrians due to visual obstructions, or when high speeds reduce reaction times. Even when pedestrians believe they have a safe opportunity to cross, unseen hazards can lead to devastating outcomes.
For those injured in pedestrian accidents, seeking immediate medical attention is essential—even when injuries seem minor at first. Head trauma, internal injuries, and fractures may not show immediate symptoms but can have long-term health consequences if left untreated.
Navigating the aftermath of a pedestrian accident can be overwhelming, with medical care, insurance claims, and legal considerations to manage. Understanding your rights and available resources can help ensure a smoother recovery process.
