Washington, MO (February 27, 2025) – A tragic late-night crash on South Lake Shore Drive near Lion’s Lake claimed the lives of two men and left two women injured on February 26.

According to the Washington Police Department, the crash occurred around 11:15 p.m. when a vehicle left the roadway, struck a fire hydrant, and then collided with the concrete base of a flagpole. Emergency responders arrived to find two of the occupants trapped inside the car, one ejected from the vehicle, and one walking outside the wreckage.

Authorities confirmed that 26-year-old Gabriel Lopez of Washington and 22-year-old Caleb Bay of Union were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two female passengers, ages 22 and 24, were transported to the hospital for treatment. The younger woman sustained life-threatening injuries, while the older woman suffered only minor injuries. Police reported that the woman with minor injuries was the only occupant wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Preliminary investigations indicate that excessive speed was a contributing factor in the accident. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.

High-Speed Crashes in Missouri

Excessive speed is a leading factor in fatal car accidents across Missouri. According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, high-speed crashes often result in severe or fatal injuries, especially when vehicles leave the roadway and strike fixed objects.

Victims of high-speed accidents may suffer catastrophic injuries that require extensive medical care and rehabilitation. Families of those lost in fatal crashes often face emotional and financial hardships, including funeral costs and loss of income. Missouri follows an at-fault insurance system, meaning that injured parties and their families may be eligible to seek compensation through legal claims.

If you or a loved one has been affected by a serious accident, seeking medical care and legal guidance is essential to ensuring your rights are protected. Consulting with a legal professional can help victims and their families pursue the compensation they deserve.
