Zanesville, OH (February 26, 2025) – A devastating crash on Interstate 70 in Muskingum County Tuesday night claimed the life of a Kentucky man and left several others injured, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred around 9:35 p.m. near mile marker 146 in Hopewell Township when a semi-truck, driven by 53-year-old James Mumaw of Chillicothe, veered off the eastbound lanes, crossed the median, and collided with two westbound vehicles.

One of the impacted vehicles was driven by 26-year-old Robert Rebitski of Hebron, Kentucky, who suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His father, George Rebitski, was a passenger and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The second vehicle involved carried four occupants: Aaron and Sarah Powell, along with two children. All four were transported to Genesis Hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency responders from National Trail Fire Department and EMS, Licking Township EMS, and multiple towing services assisted at the crash site.

Authorities continue to investigate what caused the semi-truck to leave its lane.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.

Semi-Truck Accidents in Ohio

Collisions involving semi-trucks are often catastrophic due to the size and weight of commercial vehicles. When a truck crosses the median into oncoming traffic, the results are often deadly.

Several factors can contribute to these types of crashes, including:

  • Driver Fatigue: Truck drivers often spend long hours on the road, increasing the risk of drowsy driving.
  • Mechanical Failures: Brake issues, tire blowouts, or steering problems can cause loss of control.
  • Weather & Road Conditions: Slippery roads or sudden lane changes may lead to unintended movements.
  • Medical Emergencies: Sudden health issues, such as a heart attack or seizure, can cause a driver to lose control.

Ohio law requires trucking companies and drivers to adhere to strict safety and maintenance regulations to prevent tragic incidents like this one. When negligence or preventable factors contribute to a crash, legal action may be taken to seek justice for victims and their families.

If you or a loved one has been impacted by a serious truck accident, understanding your rights and legal options is crucial.
