Manhattan, NY (February 26, 2025) – A fire at the 191st Street subway station in Washington Heights left 18 people injured on Tuesday afternoon. Authorities confirmed that the fire, which was caused by debris on the tracks, led to significant smoke conditions inside the station, prompting an emergency response.
Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after 1:10 p.m. and worked to locate the source of the fire. Power was shut off on both northbound and southbound tracks as crews battled the smoke and ensured passenger safety. EMS teams treated multiple individuals for smoke inhalation and other minor injuries. Four people sustained moderate injuries, while the remaining 14 suffered minor effects from the incident.
Transit disruptions followed as the FDNY worked to vent the smoke and secure the area. By 2:34 p.m., emergency operations had concluded, and services were in the process of resuming.
Our thoughts are with those affected, and we hope for a full recovery for all injured individuals.
Subway Accidents and Fire Risks in New York City
New York City’s subway system is one of the busiest in the world, with millions of daily riders depending on its reliability and safety. However, fires caused by track debris, electrical issues, or mechanical malfunctions can pose serious risks to commuters. Smoke inhalation incidents are particularly concerning in underground stations, where ventilation may be limited, making rapid evacuations essential.
Passengers can reduce their risk of injury during subway emergencies by remaining aware of emergency exits, listening to MTA and emergency personnel instructions, and avoiding panic during evacuations. City officials and transit safety advocates continue to push for improved maintenance and track cleaning efforts to prevent debris-related fires like the one at 191st Street.
For those affected by subway-related incidents, medical treatment and legal resources may be available to help with recovery. If you or a loved one has been injured due to a transit-related accident, understanding your rights and seeking the proper support can be critical in navigating the aftermath.
