Clifton, NJ (February 24, 2025) – A driver was injured early Sunday morning when a wrong-way drunk driver crashed head-on into his vehicle on Route 46, according to Clifton police.
The accident occurred around 2:40 a.m. between Crooks Avenue and the Garden State Parkway. Authorities say 43-year-old Paola Velez, of Belleville, was driving a 2016 Honda CR-V eastbound in the westbound lanes when she slammed into a 2007 Honda Accord.
The driver of the Accord, an adult male, suffered a leg injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Velez refused medical attention at the scene. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and had to be towed.
Clifton police arrested Velez on charges of driving while intoxicated (DWI) and issued multiple summonses for additional traffic violations. She was later released to a responsible adult under John’s Law. New Jersey State Police assisted at the crash site.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim, and we wish them a full recovery.
