Albuquerque, NM (February 23, 2025) – A tragic collision involving a city bus and a bicyclist occurred on Saturday evening near Tramway Blvd NE and the I-40 westbound on-ramp, resulting in the bicyclist’s death, according to the Albuquerque Police Department (APD).

The crash was reported shortly after 5:20 p.m., prompting an immediate response from Albuquerque Fire Rescue and APD officers. Upon arrival, first responders found the bicyclist unresponsive on the ground. Witnesses passing by the scene noted the heavy police presence and observed the city bus stopped on the I-40 westbound on-ramp.

Authorities later confirmed that the bicyclist suffered fatal head injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The bus driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

The Albuquerque Police Department’s Motor Unit has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. Road closures were implemented, with Tramway Blvd southbound closed from the I-40 on-ramp to Cloudview for an extended period while officers worked at the scene.

This marks the fourth major crash investigated by the APD Motor Unit within the past 24 hours and the second motor’s call-out of the day.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased bicyclist during this difficult time.

Bicycle Accidents in New Mexico

Bicycle accidents in New Mexico, particularly in high-traffic areas like Tramway Blvd and I-40, often result in severe or fatal injuries due to the vulnerability of cyclists compared to larger vehicles.

According to the New Mexico Department of Transportation, bicycle-related crashes account for a significant number of traffic fatalities and serious injuries in the state each year. Factors contributing to these accidents include low visibility, driver inattention, and right-of-way violations.

Cyclists are encouraged to wear protective gear, use designated bike lanes when available, and remain alert while riding near traffic. Likewise, drivers of motor vehicles—especially large vehicles such as buses—are urged to exercise caution, double-check blind spots, and remain aware of bicyclists on the road.

Victims of bicycle accidents and their families may have legal options to seek compensation for medical expenses, funeral costs, and other damages if negligence played a role in the crash.
