Johnson County, MO (February 23, 2025) – A single-vehicle crash on the 1080 block of Southwest MO-58 left five juveniles injured Saturday afternoon after the vehicle lost control and overturned.
The accident occurred at approximately 3:22 p.m. as a 17-year-old driver from Knob Noster was traveling eastbound on Highway 58. While entering an S-curve, the rear tires of the 2005 Ford Escape began to slide. The driver attempted to correct the vehicle but overcorrected, causing the SUV to veer off the right side of the road. The vehicle struck a ditch before overturning.
Emergency responders, including the Johnson County Ambulance District and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department, arrived at the scene to assist those injured. The driver sustained minor injuries, while four passengers—a 9-year-old boy, an 11-year-old boy, a 13-year-old girl, and a 15-year-old girl—all suffered moderate injuries. All five were transported to Western Missouri Medical Center for treatment.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Overcorrection and Roadway Safety in Missouri
Overcorrection is a common factor in single-vehicle crashes, especially on curvy or rural roads. When a driver suddenly loses traction, abrupt steering adjustments can lead to rollovers or vehicles leaving the roadway. Inexperienced drivers are particularly vulnerable to this type of crash due to a lack of familiarity with handling vehicle skids.
Missouri traffic data indicates that many overturn accidents occur on two-lane highways where sudden lane shifts or high-speed curves make recovery difficult. Drivers are encouraged to remain calm in situations where they lose control, gradually steer in the direction of the skid, and avoid excessive braking.
Proper driver education and awareness of road conditions can significantly reduce the likelihood of crashes caused by overcorrection. If you or a loved one has been injured in a rollover accident, seeking medical care and understanding legal options can be essential in the recovery process.
