Butler County, MO (February 23, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 142 and Highway 158, three miles west of Harviell, left multiple people injured on Friday afternoon.

The collision occurred at approximately 12:00 p.m. when a 2014 Buick Verano, traveling eastbound, failed to stop at a stop sign and entered the path of a northbound 2015 Nissan Rogue. The impact resulted in both vehicles sustaining total damage, requiring towing from the scene.

Emergency responders arrived to provide assistance. A 26-year-old woman from Neelyville, a passenger in the Nissan, suffered moderate injuries and was airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital for treatment. A 1-year-old child in the same vehicle was also transported to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center by private means for evaluation. The Nissan’s driver, a 34-year-old man from Neelyville, did not sustain injuries but was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The 61-year-old driver of the Buick, from Fairdealing, was also evaluated at the scene. Officials continue to investigate the crash.

Intersection Crashes and Traffic Safety in Missouri

Accidents at intersections, especially those involving stop signs, often result from failure to yield or driver inattention. In Missouri, rural intersections like Highway 142 and Highway 158 present unique dangers due to high speeds and limited visibility.

Traffic safety reports indicate that a significant percentage of crashes occur when drivers fail to stop at designated intersections. Whether due to distraction, misjudgment, or road conditions, these collisions can lead to severe injuries, particularly when high-speed roads are involved.

To reduce the risk of intersection crashes, drivers should always come to a complete stop at stop signs, check for cross traffic, and proceed cautiously when entering major highways. Defensive driving techniques and heightened awareness can help prevent serious accidents.

If you or a loved one has been injured in an intersection crash, seeking medical attention and understanding your legal rights can be essential in the recovery process.
