Elizabethtown, KY (February 20, 2025) – Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution after icy road conditions caused two semi-trucks to slide off Interstate 65 and crash into a residential area early Thursday morning.
The crash occurred at approximately 4:00 a.m. near mile marker 91, where both semis lost control, with one striking a home on Hawkins Drive and the other crashing into a utility pole. Despite the severity of the crash, both trucks remained upright, preventing an even more catastrophic outcome, according to Elizabethtown Police PIO Chris Denham.
One of the semi-truck drivers was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Fortunately, no one inside the home was seriously injured. Residents reported being startled by the crash, with one neighbor describing the impact as sounding like an airplane landing.
Emergency crews worked for several hours to clear the area. Utility services were not disrupted, as the truck that struck the utility pole did not cause power outages.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash and are reminding drivers to take extra precautions on icy roads.
Winter Weather and Truck Accidents in Kentucky
Winter weather conditions, including ice, snow, and freezing rain, significantly increase the risk of semi-truck crashes, particularly on highways like I-65. Poor road traction, reduced visibility, and high speeds make it difficult for large vehicles to stop in time, often leading to jackknifes, rollovers, and loss of control.
According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), winter road conditions contribute to a significant number of highway accidents each year. Drivers are urged to reduce speeds, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid sudden braking when roads become icy.
Those involved in truck accidents may face serious injuries, extensive property damage, and financial burdens. Seeking legal guidance can help individuals understand their rights and potential options for compensation.
