Omaha, NE (February 18, 2025) – A tragic crash on West Dodge Rd claimed the life of a Fremont woman Monday afternoon, according to the Omaha Police Department.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene after reports of a single-vehicle crash near the Skyline Drive bridge. Authorities determined that a 1996 Chevrolet K1500 pickup truck, driven by 60-year-old Melvin Field, was traveling eastbound when it lost control, veered off the road, and struck a guardrail. The impact caused the truck to overturn, partially ejecting 60-year-old Louise Field, who was seated in the front passenger seat. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Melvin Field and the couple’s 10-year-old grandson, who was seated between them, sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Both were transported to Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy for treatment.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, as authorities work to determine the factors that led to the vehicle losing control.
Our thoughts are with the Field family during this difficult time, and we wish the injured victims a full recovery.
Single-Vehicle Accidents in Nebraska
Single-vehicle crashes can be just as devastating as multi-vehicle accidents, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. Factors such as roadway conditions, weather, speed, and mechanical issues can contribute to a driver losing control. In Nebraska, where winter conditions can be unpredictable, sudden loss of traction can increase the risk of serious crashes, particularly on high-speed roadways like West Dodge Rd.
Authorities investigating this accident will likely examine possible contributing factors, including road surface conditions, vehicle mechanics, and potential driver fatigue. Understanding the causes of such incidents is crucial for improving roadway safety and preventing similar tragedies.
