Town of Union, WI (February 18, 2025) – A serious two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 14 near West Elmer Road left a 4-year-old child with life-threatening injuries Sunday afternoon, according to reports from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities responded to the scene at approximately 4:47 p.m. after receiving reports of the collision. Emergency responders provided medical aid to those injured before transporting them to local hospitals.
According to investigators, a 21-year-old female driver from Brooklyn, WI, was heading south on Highway 14 when she lost control due to icy road conditions. Her vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with a northbound vehicle driven by a 27-year-old male from Stoughton, WI. The child, who was in the southbound vehicle and not properly restrained, suffered critical injuries. The driver of that vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while the northbound driver suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Following an initial investigation, authorities arrested the female driver on multiple charges, including second-degree reckless endangerment causing great bodily harm, child neglect causing great bodily harm, and knowingly operating while suspended causing great bodily harm.
The crash remains under investigation. Our thoughts are with those affected by this incident, and we hope for a full recovery for the injured child.
Car Accidents in Wisconsin
Winter weather conditions in Wisconsin often contribute to hazardous driving situations, increasing the risk of serious accidents. Ice and snow can reduce traction, making it difficult for drivers to maintain control, especially at higher speeds. This unfortunate crash highlights the dangers of driving too fast for road conditions and the critical importance of proper child safety restraints.
Wisconsin law requires all children under the age of 4 to be secured in an appropriate car seat, while those between 4 and 8 must use a booster seat unless they meet height and weight exemptions. Ensuring children are properly restrained can significantly reduce the risk of severe injuries in a crash.
In accidents involving injuries, victims and their families often face significant medical expenses, long recovery periods, and emotional trauma. Legal options may be available to help those affected recover damages, including medical costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Understanding these rights is essential in the aftermath of a severe accident.
