Loxahatchee, FL (February 18, 2025) – Two Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) deputies tragically lost their lives, and a third remains in critical condition after an SUV veered off the road and struck them on Southern Boulevard.
According to Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, the crash occurred around 9 a.m. when a driver, attempting to avoid a slower vehicle, overcorrected and lost control. The SUV hit a guardrail before colliding with three deputies who were stationed on the side of the road.
Corporal Luis Paez and Deputy Sheriff Ralph “Butch” Waller were pronounced dead after being transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center. Both men were longtime veterans of the PBSO, with over 50 years of combined service. Deputy Ignacio “Dan” Diaz was also severely injured in the crash and remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit.
The deputies were conducting a speed enforcement operation when one of them experienced mechanical issues with their motorcycle. As the other two came to assist, the SUV struck them while they waited for a jumpstart.
The driver of the SUV, who has not been identified, sustained minor injuries. Preliminary reports indicate that impairment was not a factor in the crash. The Florida Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation.
A massive law enforcement procession was held to escort the fallen deputies from St. Mary’s Medical Center to the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office. Hundreds of officers, deputies, and community members lined the streets to honor their service.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families, colleagues, and loved ones of Deputies Paez and Waller. Our thoughts remain with Deputy Diaz as he fights for his recovery.
