Troy, MT (February 18, 2025) – A 90-year-old man from Troy lost his life after his vehicle was struck by a train late Saturday morning. The fatal collision occurred at approximately 11:35 a.m. near the intersection of US Highway 2 and Hunts Mill Road, several miles north of Troy.
According to the Montana Highway Patrol, the man was driving a Ford Taurus northbound on Hunts Mill Road as a westbound train approached from the east. Reports indicate that the driver initially stopped on the railroad tracks before attempting to reverse, but he was unable to clear the crossing in time. The train struck the vehicle, causing severe damage.
Emergency responders transported the victim to Cabinet Peaks Medical Center in Libby, where he succumbed to his injuries. Authorities confirmed that the man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Weather conditions also played a role, as the road was snow-covered. However, investigators determined that drugs and alcohol were not contributing factors.
The Montana Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family during this difficult time.
Railroad Crossing Safety and Crash Risks in Montana
Railroad crossing collisions remain a serious concern in Montana, particularly in rural areas where crossings may lack gates or warning signals. Accidents like this one near US Highway 2 highlight the dangers of icy or snow-covered roads, which can make it more difficult for drivers to stop or maneuver safely at crossings.
Drivers should always approach railroad crossings with caution, especially in winter conditions. Key safety tips include:
- Stopping at least 15 feet away from the tracks when a train is approaching.
- Looking both ways and listening for oncoming trains before proceeding.
- Never stopping on the tracks or attempting to outrun a train.
- Being extra cautious when road conditions are slick or visibility is low.
If a vehicle becomes stuck on the tracks, drivers should exit immediately and move to a safe distance. Most railroad crossings have emergency notification signs with contact information for train dispatchers, which can be used to report an obstruction on the tracks.
