Jim Wells County, TX (February 18, 2025) – A woman was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash late Monday night while walking along Texas State Highway 359 in Jim Wells County.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m., about one mile south of Alfred. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), 25-year-old Mikaela Lee, a resident of Alice, was walking in the southbound lane of the highway when an unidentified vehicle traveling in the same direction struck her.

Officials reported that road conditions at the time of the crash included fog and drizzle, which may have impacted visibility. Witnesses had previously called authorities to report a pedestrian walking in and out of the roadway. Deputies from the Jim Wells County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, but the crash occurred before they arrived.

Lee was pronounced dead at the scene by Jim Wells County Justice of the Peace McKenzie Chapa.

The driver responsible for the crash did not stop and has not yet been identified. State troopers from the Texas Highway Patrol office in Alice are leading the investigation. Authorities have not released any information on the make or model of the vehicle involved.

Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Mikaela Lee during this difficult time.

Pedestrian Safety and Hit-and-Run Accidents in Texas

Pedestrian fatalities remain a significant concern across Texas, particularly on high-speed roadways with limited visibility. Road conditions, weather, and driver awareness all play a role in preventing tragic accidents like the one on Texas State Highway 359.

Hit-and-run accidents, in particular, leave victims’ families searching for answers and justice. When a driver fails to stop after a collision, investigators rely on witness statements, surveillance footage, and forensic evidence to identify the responsible party. Authorities urge drivers to remain at the scene of any crash, as failing to do so can result in severe criminal penalties.

For families affected by pedestrian accidents, seeking legal guidance can help navigate the process of holding those responsible accountable. Anyone with information about this crash is urged to contact law enforcement to assist in the investigation.
