Pasco County, FL (February 15, 2025) A 51-year-old man from Lakeland was tragically killed in a serious collision on Highway 98 in Pasco County on Friday night. The crash, which involved two vehicles, also left three others with serious injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

Authorities reported that the accident occurred at approximately 7:06 p.m. when the victim was traveling northbound in a Kia Soul. At the same time, a 28-year-old Orlando man, driving a Genesis GV80, was heading south on the highway.

Investigators say that south of Stanton Hall Dr, the Genesis attempted to pass another vehicle, crossing into the northbound lane and directly into the path of the Kia Soul. The two vehicles collided head-on, resulting in fatal injuries for the 51-year-old driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Genesis, along with a 43-year-old Orlando man and a 28-year-old Kissimmee woman, all sustained serious injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

FHP continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and urges drivers to exercise caution when overtaking vehicles on two-lane highways.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased, as well as those recovering from their injuries.

Fatal Car Accidents in Florida

Florida sees a high number of fatal accidents each year, with rural highways like Highway 98 often posing significant dangers due to high-speed limits, passing maneuvers, and limited visibility.

According to data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of crashes, often leading to catastrophic injuries or fatalities. Some of the primary causes of these accidents include:

  • Improper passing on two-lane highways
  • Distracted or impaired driving
  • Speeding or reckless driving
  • Failure to obey traffic laws

When involved in a serious crash, victims and their families may face physical, emotional, and financial hardships. It is crucial to seek legal guidance and understand the rights available to those affected by negligent driving.
