Swisher County, TX (February 15, 2025) – A tragic accident involving black ice claimed the life of one person and left three others injured in Swisher County. The crash occurred at approximately 1:10 a.m. on Interstate 27.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), 37-year-old Christopher Moreno of Happy, Texas, was driving a 2005 Mercedes C240 southbound in the right lane of I-27. Passengers in the vehicle included 34-year-old Glennewyn Johnson of Happy, Texas, and 29-year-old Quadre Brookins of Plainview, Texas.
As Moreno’s vehicle traveled over an overpass covered in black ice, he lost control, causing the car to spin and come to a stop facing north in the southbound right lane. Moments later, a 2022 Freightliner Cascadia towing a semi-trailer, driven by 61-year-old Todd McElroy, approached the overpass in the same lane.
Officials reported that both Moreno and McElroy attempted to avoid a collision, but due to the icy conditions, they were unable to maneuver in time. The truck struck the car head-on as both vehicles moved toward the improved shoulder.
Emergency crews arrived quickly to assist the victims. Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. Moreno and Brookins were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. McElroy was treated at the scene and released. Unfortunately, Johnson sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have confirmed that the crash remains under investigation as they review the factors leading up to the accident.
Our thoughts are with those affected by this devastating crash, and we extend our condolences to the family and friends of the victim.
The Dangers of Black Ice on Texas Highways
Winter weather conditions create significant hazards for Texas drivers, particularly when black ice forms on bridges and overpasses. Unlike visible snow or slush, black ice is nearly transparent and blends with the road surface, making it extremely difficult for drivers to detect.
Highways like I-27, which see regular commercial and passenger vehicle traffic, become even more dangerous when icy conditions are present. Vehicles traveling at highway speeds may struggle to maintain traction, especially on elevated surfaces where freezing occurs more rapidly. Even experienced drivers can lose control in these conditions, leading to spinouts and multi-vehicle collisions.
Safety experts recommend reducing speed when temperatures drop to near freezing, even if roads appear clear. Keeping a safe following distance allows drivers more time to react to sudden changes in traffic. Avoiding sudden braking and steering movements can also help prevent skidding. Drivers traveling in areas prone to ice should remain cautious, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and shaded road sections.
For those injured in winter weather accidents, recovery can be challenging both physically and financially. Seeking medical attention and understanding legal options may be necessary for those affected by collisions caused by hazardous road conditions.
