Scottsdale, AZ (February 12, 2025) – One person has died and four others were injured following a runway collision at Scottsdale Airport on Monday afternoon. The crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. when a small jet arriving from Austin, Texas, veered off the runway and collided with a larger jet, according to airport officials.
Preliminary reports indicate that the landing jet’s left main gear failed upon touchdown, causing the aircraft to lose control and crash into the stationary jet. Emergency crews from Scottsdale Fire responded quickly to the scene to assist the five individuals involved in the crash.
Tragically, the pilot of the incoming jet, identified as 78-year-old Joie Vitosky, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other passengers were transported to a local hospital for treatment of various injuries, while one individual declined medical care.
The runway at Scottsdale Airport remained closed for several hours as emergency personnel worked to assist victims and clear debris. The runway was reopened just before 9:00 p.m. following an extensive investigation and cleanup.
One of the jets involved in the crash is registered to Chromed in Hollywood, LLC, a company based out of Franklin, Tennessee. Incorporation records list Vince Neil, the frontman of the rock band Mötley Crüe, as the president of the company. The band issued a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter), providing additional details about the collision, though they did not confirm whether Neil was directly involved in the incident.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are investigating the cause of the crash, focusing on the reported landing gear failure.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Joie Vitosky during this difficult time. We also extend our thoughts to those injured and hope for their swift recovery.
Aircraft Accidents in the U.S.
Aircraft accidents, while less common than motor vehicle crashes, often result in severe injuries or fatalities due to the complexities of flight and landing procedures. Small jets and private aircraft are particularly vulnerable during takeoff and landing phases, where mechanical failures or pilot errors can lead to catastrophic outcomes.
In this case, the suspected failure of the jet’s left main landing gear highlights the importance of rigorous maintenance checks and pre-flight inspections. Landing gear malfunctions can cause significant instability upon touchdown, leading to runway excursions or collisions with other aircraft, as seen in this tragic incident at Scottsdale Airport.
Runway accidents can involve multiple contributing factors, including mechanical issues, pilot error, weather conditions, and air traffic control communication. Investigations by the NTSB and FAA are essential for determining the root cause and implementing safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
For the families of victims and survivors of aircraft accidents, the aftermath can be overwhelming, involving not only emotional trauma but also legal and financial challenges. Aviation accidents often require specialized legal expertise to navigate the complexities of liability, insurance claims, and potential compensation for damages.
