Malabar, FL (February 12, 2025) – One person was transported to a nearby hospital on Tuesday afternoon after a sport utility vehicle (SUV) collided with a Brightline train in the Malabar area. The crash occurred around 3:00 p.m. at the railroad crossing on Jordan Boulevard, just off U.S. 1, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Witnesses reported that the driver, believed to be in his late 50s or 60s, attempted to drive past the lowered railroad crossing arms as the high-speed Brightline passenger train approached. The SUV was struck, causing significant damage to the vehicle. Brevard County Fire Rescue crews, along with firefighters from the Malabar Volunteer Fire Department, arrived on the scene within minutes and extricated the driver from the wreckage.
The driver was reported to be awake and alert when pulled from the vehicle. “The driver was awake and alert,” said Tommy Linn Jr., a witness who spoke to the man while he was trapped inside the SUV. The injured individual was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. No passengers or crew members on the Brightline train were injured.
This incident marks the fourth Brightline-related crash in Brevard County this year. The other three incidents—two in Melbourne and one in Cocoa—involved pedestrians and resulted in fatalities.
The Florida Highway Patrol is actively investigating the cause of this collision.
Train-Vehicle Collisions in Florida
Collisions between vehicles and trains are among the most devastating types of traffic accidents, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. Florida’s expanding Brightline high-speed rail system, while providing efficient transportation options, has also been associated with a rising number of accidents at railroad crossings. The Malabar incident underscores the dangers of attempting to bypass safety barriers at train crossings.
Common causes of train-vehicle collisions include drivers misjudging the speed of oncoming trains, ignoring warning signals, or attempting to beat the train by crossing tracks after the barriers are down. High-speed trains like Brightline can approach crossings quickly and quietly, leaving little time for drivers to react if they miscalculate.
Train crossings are equipped with safety mechanisms such as flashing lights, warning bells, and crossing arms to prevent vehicles from entering the tracks when a train is approaching. Ignoring these signals can have catastrophic consequences. Fortunately, in this case, the driver survived, though serious injuries were sustained.
Brightline-related crashes have become a growing concern in Brevard County, with four incidents reported this year alone. While the previous accidents involved pedestrians and resulted in fatalities, this incident highlights the risks for drivers as well. Increased public awareness and adherence to crossing signals are critical for preventing future tragedies.
If you or a loved one has been involved in a train-related accident, it’s essential to seek immediate medical attention, even if injuries seem minor. Legal guidance is also important, as victims may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages resulting from the crash.
