Pasco County, FL (February 11, 2025) – An 81-year-old man from Hudson tragically lost his life following a two-vehicle collision on State Road 52 Monday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). The accident occurred around 12:08 p.m., just west of the intersection of Little Rd.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, where they found the elderly driver critically injured after his Jeep Cherokee collided with a commercial truck. The Jeep, traveling eastbound on SR-52, attempted to make a left turn into a plaza entrance, inadvertently crossing into the path of the westbound truck driven by a 62-year-old man from Apollo Beach. The impact caused the Jeep to rotate and overturn.
Paramedics transported the 81-year-old driver to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the commercial truck was unharmed, and no additional injuries were reported.
FHP continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine if any other factors contributed to the tragic incident.
Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.
Left-Turn Accidents in Florida
Left-turn accidents, like the tragic crash on SR-52 in Pasco County, are a common cause of serious injuries and fatalities on Florida roads. These types of collisions often occur when drivers misjudge the speed or distance of oncoming vehicles or fail to see them altogether. For elderly drivers, factors such as slower reaction times or diminished visibility can increase the risk of such incidents.
In areas with high traffic volumes, like the busy corridors along SR-52, left-turns across opposing lanes can be especially hazardous. Florida law requires drivers making left turns to yield to oncoming traffic, but even a brief miscalculation can result in devastating consequences. Additionally, larger vehicles like commercial trucks pose a greater risk in collisions due to their size and weight, often causing severe damage to smaller passenger vehicles.
This incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of caution when making left-hand turns, especially at busy intersections or near plaza entrances. Drivers are encouraged to double-check for oncoming traffic and ensure they have ample time and space to complete their turn safely. For older drivers, regular vision and health check-ups can help maintain road safety and reduce the risk of accidents.
