Acadia Parish, LA (February 10, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 West near Trumps Rd in Egan claimed the life of a 58-year-old Baton Rouge man early Sunday morning.
According to Louisiana State Police Troop I, the crash occurred shortly after midnight and involved a 2007 Honda Accord driven by Luvenson Sowell and a 2024 Kenworth semi-truck. Preliminary investigations revealed that the Kenworth had come to a stop in the right westbound lane due to traffic congestion from a previous crash. For reasons still under investigation, Sowell’s Honda failed to stop in time and struck the rear of the Kenworth’s trailer.
Tragically, Sowell was unrestrained at the time of the crash and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Kenworth, who was properly restrained, was uninjured in the collision.
Standard toxicology samples were collected from both drivers and submitted for analysis as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities continue to examine the circumstances that led to the crash.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Luvenson Sowell during this difficult time.
Truck and Rear-End Collisions in Louisiana
Rear-end collisions involving passenger vehicles and large trucks like semi-trailers are often severe, especially when there is a significant speed differential between vehicles. Highways like Interstate 10 are frequent sites of such crashes due to high traffic volumes, congestion, and sudden stops.
In Louisiana, failure to wear a seatbelt significantly increases the risk of fatal injuries in the event of a collision. State law mandates that all occupants in a vehicle, regardless of their seating position, must remain properly restrained at all times. While not all crashes are survivable, wearing a seatbelt dramatically reduces the risk of serious injury or death.
The state follows a fault-based system, meaning that victims or their families may pursue compensation from the at-fault party for medical expenses, lost wages, funeral costs, and other damages. However, comparative fault laws may affect compensation if the victim’s actions, such as not wearing a seatbelt, contributed to the severity of their injuries.
If you or someone you know has been involved in a truck accident or rear-end collision, it is critical to seek immediate medical attention, document the scene, and consult with legal professionals to protect your rights and secure fair compensation.
