Bluffdale, UT (February 7, 2025) – A multi-vehicle rollover crash near the Point of the Mountain between Bluffdale and Lehi claimed the life of one individual and caused significant traffic delays on Thursday. The Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) reported that the accident occurred just before noon on I-15, bringing traffic from Utah County into Salt Lake County to a near standstill.
The crash involved multiple vehicles, including an SUV that rolled over. The driver of the SUV sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. No additional injuries have been reported at this time.
Troopers from the Utah Highway Patrol remain on the scene, conducting a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash. As part of the investigation, the right four lanes of I-15 were closed, leaving only two lanes open for northbound traffic heading into Salt Lake County. UHP estimates that the closure will last approximately three hours, with an expected reopening around 3 p.m.
The Utah Department of Transportation’s online traffic monitor indicates that the crash has caused severe congestion, with traffic backed up nearly three miles from the Point of the Mountain past 2100 North. Commuters were advised to seek alternate routes, such as Redwood Road, to avoid delays.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the individual who lost their life in this tragic accident.
Rollover Accidents and Highway Safety in Utah
Rollover accidents, like the fatal crash near the Point of the Mountain in Bluffdale, are among the most dangerous types of vehicle collisions, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. These accidents typically occur when a vehicle loses stability due to sudden maneuvers, high speeds, or collisions with other vehicles. SUVs and trucks are particularly susceptible to rollovers because of their higher center of gravity.
According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, over 61,000 traffic crashes were reported in the state in 2023, with a significant number involving rollovers. High-speed highways like I-15 are especially prone to such incidents due to the fast-moving traffic and the potential for abrupt lane changes or sudden stops. The Point of the Mountain area, a busy stretch between Utah County and Salt Lake County, often experiences heavy commuter traffic, which can contribute to higher crash rates.
Rollover crashes can cause catastrophic injuries, including traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, fractures, and internal trauma. In many cases, occupants are ejected from the vehicle if seat belts are not worn, drastically increasing the likelihood of fatal outcomes. Even when seat belts are used, the violent nature of rollovers can result in life-threatening injuries.
In addition to the immediate physical consequences, fatal crashes leave families grappling with emotional trauma and financial burdens, including funeral expenses, medical bills, and lost income. Legal guidance can be crucial in navigating these challenges, especially when determining liability and seeking compensation.
