Stanton Township, WI (February 7, 2025) – A fatal crash on State Highway 64 near Stanton Township claimed the life of a 38-year-old man early Thursday morning. According to the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office, slick road conditions were a contributing factor in the collision, which occurred around 6:48 AM on the 1600 block of the highway.

Authorities report that Jeremiah Green of Clear Lake was driving a Mazda westbound on State Highway 64 when he lost control of his vehicle on the icy roadway. His car crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Ford Escape traveling eastbound. Tragically, Green was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The driver of the Ford Escape, a 46-year-old man from Prairie Farm, sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries has not yet been disclosed.

The crash remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the full extent of the contributing factors. Stanton Township, located approximately 28 miles northeast of Hudson, experienced hazardous road conditions Thursday morning, which may have played a role in the accident.

Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Jeremiah Green, and we wish the injured driver a swift recovery.

Winter Driving Hazards and Fatal Crashes in Wisconsin

Wisconsin’s harsh winter weather often contributes to hazardous road conditions, increasing the likelihood of serious and fatal accidents. The recent tragedy in Stanton Township highlights the dangers posed by slick and icy roads, particularly in rural areas where snow and ice removal may be slower than in urban centers.

Accidents caused by winter weather often involve vehicles losing control due to reduced traction, leading to collisions, rollovers, and in severe cases, fatalities. Common factors include black ice, snow accumulation, and reduced visibility from blowing snow or fog. Even experienced drivers can struggle to maintain control in these conditions, making it crucial to adjust driving behaviors during winter months.

Seat belt use is another critical factor in crash survivability. In this tragic incident, the victim was not wearing a seat belt, which may have contributed to the fatal outcome. According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, seat belts significantly reduce the risk of fatal injuries in accidents, especially in high-impact collisions like head-on crashes.

For drivers in Wisconsin, it’s important to take extra precautions during the winter season. Reducing speed, maintaining a safe following distance, and ensuring vehicles are equipped with winter tires can help minimize risks. Additionally, always wearing a seat belt, regardless of weather conditions, remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect oneself in the event of a crash.
