Primghar, IA (February 6, 2025) – A two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Third St SE and S Hayes Ave in Primghar resulted in one person being injured on Monday afternoon.

According to reports from the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 1 p.m. when 71-year-old Ricky Allen Mason, of Alta, was traveling south on Hayes Ave and failed to stop at a stop sign. His 2024 GMC Terrain entered the intersection and was struck by a westbound 2013 Ford Edge driven by 50-year-old Jennifer Elizabeth Haafke of Primghar.

Emergency responders were quick to the scene, providing care to Mason, who was later transported by the Paullina Ambulance to Cherokee Regional Medical Center for treatment. No other injuries were reported in the crash.

Authorities noted that Haafke exhibited signs of impairment at the scene, including bloodshot eyes, impaired balance, and mood swings. She failed field sobriety tests and admitted to taking prescription medication that could affect her driving. She was later arrested and charged with first-offense operating while under the influence and failure to provide proof of vehicle liability insurance.

Mason was cited for failure to obey a stop sign and yield the right of way. The crash remains under investigation by local authorities.

Our thoughts are with those affected by this accident, and we hope for a swift recovery for the injured party.

Car Accidents in Iowa

Intersections are frequent sites of car crashes, often caused by drivers failing to yield, running stop signs, or misjudging the right of way. In Iowa, traffic accidents involving stop-sign violations can have serious consequences, resulting in injuries and legal penalties for those at fault.

According to state data, intersection-related crashes account for a significant portion of all collisions, particularly in rural areas where traffic control devices may be less prominent. While stop signs are designed to regulate the flow of traffic and reduce accident risks, failure to obey them remains a common cause of crashes.

Additionally, driving under the influence—whether due to alcohol, illegal substances, or prescription medication—poses a major risk to roadway safety. Impaired drivers experience delayed reaction times, poor judgment, and loss of coordination, all of which increase the likelihood of an accident.

Victims injured in crashes caused by negligent drivers may be entitled to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages. Seeking legal guidance can help those affected understand their rights and navigate the claims process after an accident.

If you or a loved one has been involved in a collision, seeking immediate medical attention and consulting with a professional may be crucial in protecting your rights and well-being. For more information or to receive help after an accident, contact Local Accident Reports.
