Odessa, TX (February 6, 2025) – A four-vehicle crash in Ector County on Tuesday resulted in the tragic death of an Odessa man, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
The crash occurred near the intersection of W. University Blvd and Mercedes Ave. DPS reports that 60-year-old Gregory Gardner was killed when a GMC Sierra, towing another Sierra, crossed into the westbound lanes of University Blvd. The towed vehicle first struck a BMW X3 driven by a 30-year-old woman from Midland, who was transported to a nearby hospital in serious condition.
Following the initial collision, the towed Sierra continued into Gardner’s lane, striking his Toyota Rav4. Gardner was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Gregory Gardner. We also extend our thoughts to the woman injured in this tragic incident, hoping for her swift recovery.
Multi-Vehicle Crashes and Road Safety in Texas
Multi-vehicle collisions, such as this tragic incident in Odessa, are often complex and result in severe consequences, particularly when towing vehicles are involved. Roads like W. University Blvd in Ector County, with high traffic volumes and mixed vehicle types, present significant risks for accidents, especially when drivers lose control or fail to maintain safe towing practices.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, improper towing is a contributing factor in many roadway accidents. Towing adds additional weight and instability, making it harder to control a vehicle, especially during turns or sudden stops. When a towed vehicle detaches or swerves into oncoming traffic, the results can be catastrophic, as seen in this case.
For families affected by fatal crashes, the aftermath can be emotionally and financially overwhelming. In cases where negligence or unsafe driving practices contribute to an accident, surviving family members may have the right to pursue legal action for wrongful death, seeking compensation for funeral expenses, loss of income, and other damages. Victims who survive such crashes, like the injured Midland woman, may also be entitled to compensation for medical expenses and long-term recovery needs.
If you or someone you know has been affected by a multi-vehicle crash, understanding your legal rights and options for recovery is essential.
