McCool Junction, NE (February 3, 2024) – A serious collision involving a semi-truck and a minivan left one driver with severe injuries Friday morning in York County.
According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the crash at approximately 8:50 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 81 and Road 3, about a mile south of McCool Junction.
Witnesses reported that a semi-truck was traveling northbound on Highway 81 while a minivan approached from the west on Road 3. The minivan driver reportedly pulled out from a stop sign, prompting the semi-truck driver—who was from Belleville, Kansas—to take evasive action by moving into the passing lane and ultimately into the grass median. Despite the attempt to avoid a collision, the crash occurred.
Emergency responders transported the minivan driver, a resident of central Nebraska, to York General Hospital with serious injuries. Authorities indicated that he might be transferred to a hospital in Lincoln for further treatment. The semi-truck driver was uninjured in the crash.
The accident resulted in a temporary closure of Highway 81 for approximately 30 minutes while crews worked to clear the scene. The York County Sheriff’s Office, along with fire departments from York and McCool Junction, assisted in the emergency response.
Our thoughts are with the injured driver, and we wish him a full recovery.
Truck Accidents in Nebraska
Collisions involving semi-trucks often lead to severe injuries due to the significant size and weight difference between large commercial vehicles and passenger cars. Intersections along highways, like the one at Highway 81 and Road 3, can be particularly dangerous when visibility is limited, and drivers must make split-second decisions.
Nebraska law requires all drivers to yield appropriately at stop signs and exercise caution before entering major roadways. However, even when taking precautions, accidents can still occur due to misjudged distances, blind spots, or unexpected roadway conditions.
Victims of truck accidents often face extensive medical treatments, financial burdens, and long recovery periods. Understanding one’s rights, including seeking medical and legal assistance, is crucial in these situations. Insurance claims involving commercial trucks can be complex, making professional guidance beneficial for those seeking compensation for medical expenses and other losses.
If you or a loved one has been affected by a truck accident, support is available. Knowing your options can help you take the necessary steps toward recovery and financial security. Stay informed, stay safe, and reach out for assistance when needed.
