Harvey, LA (February 2, 2025) – A three-vehicle crash on the Westbank Expressway in Jefferson Parish Saturday evening resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, leading to the arrest of a driver on vehicular homicide and other charges, according to Louisiana State Police.
Troopers from State Police Troop B responded to the scene at approximately 7:11 PM near Manhattan Boulevard. Investigators determined that a 2006 Toyota RAV4 had stopped behind a 2006 Chevrolet HHR due to traffic congestion on the elevated portion of the highway. At the same time, a 2012 Nissan Titan, driven by Felipe Reyes-Ventura, 43, of Gretna, entered the elevated highway from Lafayette Street. For reasons still under investigation, the Nissan crashed into the rear of the Toyota, pushing it into the Chevrolet.
Jose Bueso-Siguense, 53, of Gretna, an unrestrained front-seat passenger in the Nissan, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he later died. Reyes-Ventura and the occupants of the Toyota and Chevrolet also suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Authorities reported that Reyes-Ventura exhibited signs of impairment at the scene. He was arrested and booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center on vehicular homicide, three counts of vehicular negligent injuring, reckless operation, and driving without a license.
Louisiana State Police are continuing their investigation into the crash.
Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragedy, and we extend our condolences to the family of the victim.
Multi-Vehicle Accidents and Impaired Driving in Louisiana
Multi-vehicle collisions on high-speed roadways like the Westbank Expressway often result in severe injuries or fatalities, particularly when impairment is involved. Stopped or slowed traffic on elevated highways can create hazardous conditions, as vehicles approaching high speeds may not have enough time to react. Rear-end crashes at highway speeds frequently lead to whiplash, spinal injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and fatalities, especially for unrestrained passengers.
Impaired driving remains a leading cause of fatal crashes in Louisiana. Alcohol and drug impairment significantly reduces a driver’s ability to react, judge distances, and maintain control of a vehicle. Drivers under the influence may fail to recognize stopped traffic ahead, increasing the risk of high-impact collisions. Louisiana law allows victims of impaired driving crashes and their families to pursue compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages.
Determining fault in multi-vehicle collisions requires a thorough investigation of roadway conditions, driver behavior, and possible impairment factors. Surveillance footage, toxicology reports, and crash reconstruction data may all be used to establish liability.
