Charlotte County, FL (January 31, 2025) – A tragic accident involving a vehicle and a bicyclist left one man dead Thursday night in Charlotte County. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the crash occurred around 6:37 p.m. on Midway Boulevard, between U.S.-41 and Albury Drive.

Authorities reported that a 30-year-old woman from Port Charlotte was driving westbound on Midway Boulevard when a 65-year-old male bicyclist attempted to cross the roadway. The man entered the direct path of the oncoming vehicle and was struck.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported the injured bicyclist to the hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and was later pronounced dead.

Following the accident, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office shut down Midway Boulevard southbound between U.S.-41 and Albury Drive, diverting traffic to Albury Drive. FHP confirmed that the crash remains under investigation.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.

Bicycle Accidents in Florida

Florida consistently ranks among the most dangerous states for bicyclists due to its high number of collisions involving vehicles. Roadways such as Midway Boulevard, which experience heavy traffic, pose significant risks for cyclists, particularly in areas without dedicated bike lanes or well-lit crossings.

Accidents involving bicycles often lead to severe injuries, including traumatic brain injuries, fractures, and internal trauma. Tragically, many of these incidents result in fatalities due to the vulnerability of cyclists compared to motor vehicles. Contributing factors in such crashes may include low visibility, distracted driving, and failure to yield.

To improve safety, both drivers and bicyclists should remain vigilant. Motorists must be aware of their surroundings and reduce speed in areas with heavy pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Cyclists should wear reflective gear, use proper lighting at night, and always follow traffic laws to minimize risks.
