Kansas City, MO (January 10, 2025) – A devastating crash on Interstate 435 near 103rd St early Friday morning claimed the lives of two individuals and critically injured another. The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 AM as a red Honda SUV lost control on the snow-covered highway.

According to Kansas City Police, the SUV was traveling at an unsafe speed for the icy conditions when it veered off the north side of the interstate. The vehicle went over a snowbank, plummeting approximately 100 feet from a bridge into the Blue River below. Emergency responders arrived promptly at the scene to assess the situation and provide medical care to the victims.

Tragically, the driver and a back-seat passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. A front-seat passenger, who suffered critical injuries, was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Authorities continue to investigate the accident to determine if other factors contributed to the crash.

Our deepest condolences go out to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident. We also extend our hopes for a swift recovery to the injured individual.

Winter Driving Risks in Missouri

Winter weather poses a significant risk to drivers, with snow and ice increasing the likelihood of losing control on the road. Missouri, like many Midwestern states, experiences hazardous conditions during the winter months, especially during early morning hours when ice is less visible. Speeding on snow-covered roads remains a common cause of severe accidents, including rollovers and multi-vehicle collisions.

This tragic crash on I-435 highlights the critical importance of adjusting driving speeds and maintaining caution in inclement weather. Missouri Highway Patrol advises drivers to reduce their speed and increase following distances during snowy and icy conditions. Regular vehicle maintenance, such as checking tires and brakes, can also prevent accidents caused by reduced traction on icy surfaces.
