St. Peters, MO (January 8, 2025) – A serious vehicle accident occurred on southbound Interstate 270 near Highway 370 at approximately 4:15 PM on Tuesday. Emergency responders, including the Pattonville and Robertson Fire Protection District EMS teams, were dispatched to the scene.

The incident involved a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander driven by a 56-year-old female from St. Peters, MO. Authorities reported that the driver was traveling too fast for the icy road conditions, causing her to lose control of the vehicle. The Outlander began to spin, veered off the right side of the roadway, struck a concrete barrier, and overturned. The vehicle fell 40 feet and came to rest on its roof on the gravel below the northbound I-270 ramp to westbound Highway 370.

Both the driver and a 54-year-old male occupant from St. Peters sustained serious injuries. Neither was wearing a safety device at the time of the crash. The driver was transported to Mercy Hospital by Robertson Fire Protection District EMS, while the passenger was transported by Pattonville Fire Protection District EMS to the same facility for treatment.

The Mitsubishi Outlander was totaled and removed by Bolin Towing Services. Corporal J.E. Lacy, with assistance from multiple Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers and the Bridgeton Police Department, is investigating the accident. Our thoughts are with the injured individuals, and we wish them a swift recovery.

Winter Driving Safety in Missouri

Accidents caused by icy road conditions, like the one on I-270, serve as critical reminders of the importance of safe winter driving. Icy roads significantly reduce vehicle traction and control, making speed adjustments and caution essential for all drivers during winter weather.

Missouri’s winter months see a marked increase in weather-related accidents. According to the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), icy and slick roads are responsible for numerous crashes each year, particularly on major highways like I-270, where traffic volume and speed exacerbate risks.

Drivers are encouraged to take extra precautions in winter weather, including reducing speed, increasing following distances, and ensuring vehicles are equipped with proper tires. Additionally, wearing seat belts is crucial for reducing the severity of injuries in the event of a collision.

If you or someone you know has been injured in a winter driving accident, seeking assistance can help you navigate the aftermath, from medical expenses to insurance claims. Understanding your rights and responsibilities is essential for recovery.
