Cherokee County, SC (January 30, 2025) – A tragic crash involving two tractor-trailers left one driver dead and another injured early Thursday morning on Interstate 85 near Exit 87.
According to the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office, the crash occurred around 3:50 AM when a Freightliner tractor-trailer, traveling southbound, collided with the rear of a Volvo tractor-trailer. Officials reported that the Freightliner was speeding and failed to recognize slowed traffic ahead, leading to the impact.
On collision, the Freightliner’s saddle fuel tanks ruptured, causing a massive explosion and fire. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the driver of the Freightliner, identified as 37-year-old Quinton Lanier Hightower of McDonough, Georgia, tragically died at the scene. His body was discovered after the fire was extinguished.
The driver of the Volvo sustained injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment. Their condition has not been disclosed.
The crash led to a complete shutdown of I-85 until approximately 7:15 AM. As of noon, the right lane remained closed as cleanup and investigations continued.
Our thoughts are with the family of Quinton Hightower and those affected by this devastating accident.
Dangers of Rear-End Truck Collisions on Highways
Rear-end collisions involving large commercial vehicles can be catastrophic, particularly when high speeds are a factor. Tractor-trailers require significantly more stopping distance than passenger vehicles, and failure to recognize slowing traffic can lead to severe crashes.
Incidents like this highlight the importance of defensive driving, proper speed management, and adherence to traffic conditions. When a collision results in a fire, the risk of severe injuries and fatalities increases dramatically. Fuel tank ruptures, like in this crash, can quickly turn a routine accident into a devastating inferno.
Victims of commercial truck accidents often face severe injuries, property damage, and emotional trauma. In cases involving negligence, injured individuals or their families may have legal options to pursue compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages. Consulting with a legal professional can help those affected understand their rights.
