Columbia, MO (January 30, 2025) – A major crash involving multiple vehicles, including several semi-trucks, shut down a portion of Interstate 70 in Columbia on Wednesday night, sending two people to the hospital.

According to Columbia Police Department (CPD) Sgt. Curtis Perkins, the crash, which occurred in the eastbound lanes of I-70, involved at least seven vehicles. Traffic in the area began slowing, but one semi-truck failed to reduce speed in time and rear-ended another semi, triggering a chain-reaction collision. Two of the involved vehicles, including a semi-truck, caught fire.

Emergency responders, including the Columbia Fire Department and CPD, arrived at the scene to contain the situation. CPD crash investigator Lori Simpson confirmed that two people sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Missouri State Highway Patrol spokesman Kyle Green stated that one of the involved tractor-trailers was carrying propane, adding an additional hazard to the scene. Firefighters worked to control the flames as CPD and other agencies shut down the roadway. Officials estimated that the highway would remain closed for at least two hours as crews worked to clear the wreckage and ensure roadway safety.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident. Drivers were urged to seek alternate routes to avoid traffic delays.

We are grateful that no life-threatening injuries were reported, and we extend our best wishes for a speedy recovery to those affected.

Semi-Truck Collisions and Highway Safety in Missouri

Collisions involving semi-trucks are among the most dangerous accidents on Missouri highways, often leading to severe injuries, significant road closures, and hazardous conditions, particularly when cargo is involved. Rear-end crashes involving large commercial vehicles are especially concerning due to the immense force and weight of these trucks, which can cause devastating chain-reaction crashes.

Missouri law requires commercial truck drivers to maintain safe following distances and adjust their speed based on traffic conditions. When traffic slows, truck drivers must react quickly to prevent rear-end collisions, which can be catastrophic, especially on high-speed roadways like I-70.

For those injured in crashes involving commercial vehicles, seeking medical attention and understanding their legal rights is crucial. Victims may face medical expenses, vehicle damage, and complex insurance claims. Ensuring that responsible parties are held accountable can help injured individuals receive the support they need.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a truck-related accident, speaking with a knowledgeable professional can help you explore your options for recovery and legal assistance.
