Reeves County, TX (January 30, 2025) – A tragic oilfield accident at a fracking site in Reeves County left one man dead and two others injured on Monday, January 27.
According to the Reeves County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO), the incident occurred at the Permian Resources-Guthrie State D 132H well site, approximately eight miles south on Highway 285 near County Road 114. Propetro Services was conducting fracking operations at the time of the accident.
Officials reported that a rupture of a pressurized device at the frac site caused the fatal incident. The victim, identified as 45-year-old Edward Rodriguez, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His next of kin was notified before the investigation commenced.
Two other men sustained injuries in the incident. One victim suffered an arm injury and was transported to Reeves Regional Hospital before being flown to Medical Center Hospital in Odessa for advanced treatment. The second injured individual, identified as the site supervisor, was taken to Reeves Regional Hospital in Pecos for treatment of minor injuries.
Deputies arriving at the scene deployed drones to check for any additional injured individuals. Emergency Services District (ESD) personnel provided medical assistance to those harmed in the accident.
Following the incident, Propetro shut down all fracking operations and powered down the site to ensure safety during the ongoing investigation. Reeves County Emergency Management assisted with scene management, while Lone Star Hazmat was called in to provide safety equipment and assess potential hazards.
Investigators with the RCSO Criminal Investigation Division determined that the accident was caused by a pressurized line, containing approximately 9,000 psi, which detached from a fracking unit. A disconnected pipe with attached valves was discovered at the site.
Authorities have stated that no foul play is suspected at this time. However, further investigations are pending, including a review by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Edward Rodriguez. Our thoughts are also with the injured workers as they recover.
Oilfield Accidents in Texas
The oil and gas industry remains one of the most hazardous work environments in Texas. Oilfield operations, especially fracking, involve high-pressure equipment and heavy machinery, increasing the risk of catastrophic incidents. Accidents like the one in Reeves County can result from equipment failure, improper maintenance, or structural failures within pressurized systems.
According to reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Texas consistently ranks among the states with the highest number of workplace fatalities related to oilfield operations. Pressurized line ruptures, well blowouts, and chemical exposure incidents are among the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities in this sector.
Oilfield workers and their families should be aware of their rights following workplace accidents. In cases of injury or wrongful death, victims and their families may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages. Consulting with industry professionals and legal experts can help navigate claims related to workplace safety violations and liability.
