Columbia County, FL (January 29, 2025) – A 64-year-old man from Lake City was struck and killed while riding his bicycle Tuesday morning in Columbia County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the fatal crash occurred around 8:00 a.m. at the northbound Interstate 75 exit ramp at State Road 47.
Investigators say a 58-year-old Melbourne man was driving a truck towing a trailer as he exited I-75 and attempted to turn right onto State Road 47. At the same time, the bicyclist was traveling south through the pedestrian crosswalk across SR-47. The front of the truck collided with the bicyclist, knocking him down before the vehicle ran over him.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene, but the bicyclist was pronounced dead. His identity has not been released.
The Florida Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.
Bicycle Accidents in Florida
Florida has one of the highest rates of bicycle-related fatalities in the United States, with intersections and highway exit ramps posing significant dangers to cyclists. Collisions between bicycles and larger vehicles often result in severe injuries or fatalities due to the disparity in size and protection.
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), many bicycle accidents occur when drivers fail to yield to cyclists in crosswalks or misjudge their speed and distance. Right-turn crashes at intersections, like the one on SR-47, are particularly common when drivers do not see or anticipate the presence of bicyclists.
For families who have lost a loved one in a tragic bicycle accident, seeking legal guidance can help them understand their rights and explore options for support. Wrongful death claims, insurance settlements, and liability investigations can be complex, making professional assistance essential.
If you or someone you love has been affected by a bicycle accident, speaking with a professional can help you understand your legal rights and take steps toward securing the support and compensation you deserve.
