Beaumont, TX (January 29, 2025) – One person was killed in a collision along eastbound U.S. Highway 90 just west of Beaumont on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the crash occurred around noon when a rollback tow truck, which was carrying a minivan and towing a car, rear-ended a Piney Woods Sanitation garbage truck.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a Mack garbage truck was traveling east, followed by an International tow truck towing a Chevrolet passenger car. Authorities reported that the driver of the tow truck failed to control their speed and crashed into the rear of the garbage truck.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene, and the driver and passenger of the tow truck were transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. However, the driver of the tow truck was pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace Chesson. The identity of the deceased individual has not yet been released, pending notification of their next of kin.

The wreck occurred near Courville’s, approximately one and a half miles west of the Beaumont Municipal Airport and just outside the city limits. U.S. Highway 90 was temporarily closed while authorities investigated and cleared the scene.

The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Officials urge drivers to maintain safe speeds and remain alert, especially when traveling behind large commercial vehicles.

Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic accident, and we extend our condolences to the family of the deceased.

Commercial Vehicle Accidents in Texas

Texas roadways frequently experience accidents involving commercial and heavy-duty vehicles, such as tow trucks and garbage trucks. These collisions often result in severe injuries or fatalities due to the size and weight of the vehicles involved.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), many truck-related accidents are caused by factors such as driver fatigue, speeding, and failure to maintain a safe following distance. In crashes involving commercial vehicles, proper adherence to safety regulations is critical in preventing deadly outcomes.

For individuals impacted by commercial vehicle accidents, seeking immediate medical attention and collecting essential evidence—including police reports, medical records, and witness statements—can be crucial for legal and insurance claims.
