Londonderry Twp, PA (January 28, 2025) – Three individuals sustained injuries Sunday morning after a Pennsylvania State Police vehicle was struck on Route 283 in Dauphin County. The collision occurred while a state trooper was investigating a separate accident in the eastbound lanes of Route 283.
According to officials, the state police vehicle, a Ford Explorer, was parked with its emergency lights activated, partially occupying the left lane and left shoulder. A Volkswagen Passat traveling down Route 283 failed to yield and collided with the state police vehicle.
The trooper in the police vehicle and two individuals in the Volkswagen suffered suspected serious injuries. All three were transported to Hershey Medical Center for treatment. Passing traffic had reportedly slowed and merged into the right lane as required by Pennsylvania’s Move Over Law, but the Volkswagen did not comply, resulting in the crash.
Emergency crews cleared the scene after securing the area and assisting the injured parties. Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the crash to determine the specific circumstances leading to the incident.
Our thoughts are with the injured individuals, and we hope for their full recovery.
Move Over Law and Accident Prevention in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania’s Move Over Law requires drivers to slow down and switch lanes when approaching emergency response areas, such as police stops, accident scenes, or tow truck operations. These laws are crucial in protecting first responders, stranded motorists, and all individuals on the road. Failure to adhere to these regulations can lead to devastating accidents, as demonstrated in the recent collision on Route 283.
This incident highlights the importance of driver vigilance and adherence to traffic laws designed to ensure the safety of everyone. Motorists are urged to always reduce speed and proceed with caution when passing emergency vehicles. Public awareness campaigns continue to stress the necessity of following these rules to prevent avoidable accidents.
