Burnside Twp, MI (January 28, 2025) – A tragic accident on Monday claimed the life of 53-year-old Marion Mazurek from Brown City after a semi-truck jackknifed on an icy stretch of M-53 near Wilcox Rd.
The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office reported that the crash occurred around 4:50 p.m. when a 64-year-old man from Warren was driving a semi-truck northbound on M-53. Strong west winds swept snow across the roadway, creating dangerously icy conditions. The truck driver lost control, causing the semi to jackknife and slide across the center line into oncoming traffic.
The semi collided head-on with Mazurek’s southbound Mini Cooper. Both vehicles left the roadway and ended up in the ditch on the west side of M-53. Despite the efforts of emergency crews, Mazurek was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi-truck driver did not report any injuries.
Authorities stated that neither driver was speeding or impaired at the time of the crash. Investigators determined that the snowy and windy weather conditions were the primary cause of the accident.
Our thoughts are with the loved ones of Marion Mazurek during this difficult time.
Weather-Related Truck Accidents in Michigan
Michigan winters often bring treacherous driving conditions, including icy roads and blowing snow that significantly impact visibility and traction. Large vehicles like semi-trucks are particularly vulnerable to losing control in such conditions, which can lead to devastating crashes.
Drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution during winter weather by reducing speed, maintaining a safe following distance, and avoiding sudden maneuvers. Road maintenance crews work diligently to keep highways safe, but conditions can deteriorate rapidly during storms or high winds.
