Charlotte, NC (January 27, 2025) – A tragic house fire in south Charlotte claimed one life and left another person seriously injured. Officials with the Charlotte Fire Department (CFD) responded to the scene around 7 PM in the 1000 block of Montford Dr, near Woodlawn Rd.

Upon arrival, fire crews encountered heavy flames engulfing the home. Firefighters began a thorough search of the residence while working to extinguish the blaze. Sadly, one individual was found deceased inside the home. Medic officials confirmed that another victim was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.

The fire required the efforts of approximately 30 firefighters and took nearly an hour to bring under control. Investigators noted that smoke detectors were present on the lower floor of the home but not on the main floor, raising concerns about fire safety measures within the residence.

The other occupants of the home, who escaped without injury, are receiving assistance from the Red Cross. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Charlotte Fire Department. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims during this difficult time.

Fire Safety in North Carolina Homes

House fires remain a devastating occurrence in North Carolina, often resulting in loss of life, injuries, and extensive property damage. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), having properly installed and maintained smoke detectors is critical to reducing fire-related fatalities. Smoke alarms should be placed on every level of a home, particularly in sleeping areas, and batteries should be checked regularly.

The causes of house fires vary but often include cooking accidents, electrical malfunctions, or the improper use of heating equipment. Homeowners and tenants are encouraged to practice fire safety by having an evacuation plan, maintaining functional smoke detectors, and avoiding fire hazards.

In the aftermath of a fire, victims face significant emotional and financial challenges, including medical expenses, property losses, and temporary displacement. Community support and resources like the Red Cross play a vital role in helping families recover.
