Charlotte, NC (January 27, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) are investigating a hit-and-run incident that left two officers injured. The crash occurred today around 5:23 AM on E. Independence Blvd near Bojangles Coliseum, where officers were redirecting traffic due to a burst water pipe.
According to officials, several CMPD officers were blocking the roadway with blue lights flashing to alert drivers to the hazard. A marked CMPD SUV was positioned at the scene, with one officer inside the vehicle and another standing beside it. The situation turned dangerous when a Honda collided with the SUV, injuring both officers. Fortunately, the injuries sustained were reported as non-life-threatening.
Following the crash, the Honda became disabled, and two of the vehicle’s four occupants fled the scene on foot. Authorities quickly apprehended one of the fleeing individuals, but the second remains at large. The driver of the Honda, identified as 32-year-old Aaron Sipf, was arrested at the scene. He is facing charges including two counts of felony hit-and-run and one count of resisting an officer. It is currently unclear if impairment played a role in the crash.
Independence Blvd was temporarily closed while investigators worked at the scene. The CMPD continues its search for the second suspect and is conducting a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Our thoughts are with the injured officers, and we hope for their swift recovery.
