Friendship, WI (January 24, 2025) – A tragic accident claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy late Wednesday evening after he was struck by a vehicle on I-41 near Winnebago St. in the town of Friendship. The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. and resulted in the closure of I-41 for 4.5 hours.
According to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, the accident stemmed from an argument among the occupants of a vehicle traveling southbound on I-41. The driver, a 59-year-old man, stopped the car partially on the median side of the highway, leaving the vehicle partially in the lane of traffic. A 31-year-old male passenger and two teenage passengers—a 15-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy—were also in the vehicle.
During the argument, some of the occupants exited the vehicle to continue the dispute on the roadside. The 14-year-old boy then stepped into the southbound lane of traffic, where he was struck by a vehicle driven by a 20-year-old man from Wauwatosa. The boy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the second vehicle is cooperating with investigators, and no further details about potential charges or contributing factors have been released at this time.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.
Pedestrian Safety on Highways
Highways like I-41 are extremely dangerous for pedestrians due to high speeds and limited visibility, particularly at night. This tragic incident underscores the importance of never exiting a vehicle on the side of a busy interstate except in emergencies and only when it is safe to do so. Arguments or distractions inside vehicles should be resolved safely off-road to avoid placing occupants in harm’s way.
Accidents involving pedestrians on highways often lead to severe injuries or fatalities, leaving lasting emotional and financial impacts on the families involved. Authorities remind all drivers and passengers to exercise caution and avoid walking along or near roadways unless absolutely necessary.
