Brooksville, FL (January 23, 2025) – An 11-year-old girl has tragically passed away after being struck by a vehicle on Tuesday afternoon in Brooksville. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Eskimo Curlew Road, just north of Osprey Avenue.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the child had recently been dropped off by a school bus and was walking northbound along the unpaved and unmarked edge of the road. A Toyota Corolla, driven by a 65-year-old Brooksville woman, struck the girl as she walked near the roadway.
Emergency responders rushed the child to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for critical injuries. Despite their efforts, the young girl tragically succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday night. The driver of the Corolla was not injured in the crash.
The FHP has launched an investigation into the collision and is considering factors such as visibility, speed, and the absence of a designated pedestrian walkway as they work to determine the cause of this heartbreaking incident.
Our deepest condolences go out to the child’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
Pedestrian Accidents in Florida
Florida has one of the highest rates of pedestrian accidents in the United States, with many incidents occurring in rural or suburban areas lacking proper pedestrian infrastructure. Roads like Eskimo Curlew Road, which are unpaved and unmarked, can create dangerous conditions for pedestrians, especially near school bus stops and residential zones.
Pedestrian accidents involving children are particularly tragic, as young pedestrians are more vulnerable due to their size and limited ability to anticipate roadway dangers. The lack of sidewalks or designated walking paths, combined with factors such as low visibility or driver distraction, can increase the likelihood of such devastating collisions.
For families grieving the loss of a loved one in a pedestrian accident, understanding their legal rights and accessing supportive resources is critical. Counseling, financial guidance, and legal advice can help families navigate the aftermath of these tragedies.
