St. Louis, MO (January 23, 2025) – Emergency responders from the Des Peres Fire Department were dispatched to a multi-vehicle collision on southbound I-270, north of Dougherty Ferry Road, late Tuesday morning. The crash, which occurred at approximately 11:30 AM, involved four vehicles traveling in a sequential order, resulting in injuries for one driver.
According to reports, a 2018 Chevrolet Trax, driven by a 34-year-old woman from Fenton, MO, failed to stop in time for slowing traffic. The Trax struck the rear of a 2015 Ford Focus, which in turn caused a chain-reaction collision involving a 2010 Toyota Corolla and a 2020 Honda HR-V.
The driver of the Chevrolet Trax sustained injuries despite using a safety device and was transported by the Des Peres Fire Department to SSM Health St. Clare Hospital for treatment. The other drivers, aged 33, 59, and 61, were uninjured and able to either drive their vehicles from the scene or have them towed. The Chevrolet Trax was towed by McNamara’s Towing due to damage.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the crash resulted from a failure to maintain proper lookout and stopping distance. Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Our thoughts go out to all those affected.
Chain-Reaction Accidents in Missouri
Multi-vehicle collisions, such as the four-car crash on I-270, highlight the importance of attentive driving and maintaining safe following distances. Chain-reaction crashes often occur in high-traffic areas where sudden stops are common, increasing the likelihood of rear-end impacts.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), rear-end collisions account for a significant portion of traffic accidents in the state. These crashes are frequently caused by distractions, speeding, or following too closely. Chain-reaction crashes, in particular, can cause a ripple effect, affecting multiple vehicles and increasing the likelihood of injuries.
Drivers can reduce the risk of these accidents by maintaining a safe distance, avoiding distractions such as mobile phones, and staying alert to changing traffic conditions. Similarly, in areas of heavy congestion, slowing down and preparing for sudden stops are critical to preventing multi-vehicle pileups.
If you or someone you know has been involved in a chain-reaction crash, understanding your rights and responsibilities is essential. Victims may face challenges with medical expenses, insurance claims, and vehicle repairs, making it crucial to seek professional assistance to navigate these processes.
