Festus, MO (January 23, 2025) – Emergency responders arrived promptly at the scene of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of US 67 and Route CC on Tuesday morning. The collision, which occurred at approximately 8:45 AM, involved a northbound 2014 Peterbilt 388 and a westbound 2018 Honda CR-V.
Authorities reported that the driver of the Honda, a 71-year-old woman from Festus, MO, sustained injuries. She was wearing her safety belt at the time of the crash and was transported to Mercy Hospital Jefferson by private conveyance for further care. The driver of the Peterbilt, a 42-year-old man from Bonne Terre, MO, was unharmed in the incident.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the Honda CR-V was stopped at a red light on Route CC before entering the intersection when the light turned green. The Peterbilt, traveling north on US 67, reportedly failed to stop at its red light, colliding with the left side of the Honda. Both vehicles sustained damage, with the Peterbilt incurring moderate damage and the Honda being totaled. Tow trucks from Buckley Towing and Pippins Towing removed the vehicles from the scene.
The crash remains under investigation as officials work to determine contributing factors. We extend our thoughts to all those affected by this unfortunate incident.
Intersection Accidents in Missouri
Accidents at intersections, such as the one at US 67 and Route CC, are unfortunately common across Missouri. Intersections often pose increased risks due to their complexity and the potential for driver errors like failing to yield or running red lights.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), nearly 30% of the state’s traffic crashes occur at intersections, with many of them resulting in serious injuries or fatalities. Among the common causes of these accidents are distracted driving, speeding, and disregarding traffic signals. Drivers must remain alert and cautious, particularly when approaching intersections.
Preventing intersection collisions requires adherence to traffic laws and defensive driving practices. Strategies such as reducing speed when approaching intersections, scanning for cross traffic, and anticipating the actions of other drivers can significantly reduce risks. Communities can also advocate for enhanced intersection safety measures, such as improved traffic signal timing and the addition of signage or roundabouts.
