Ellsworth, ME (January 22, 2025) – A fire at Meadow View Apartments on Meadow View Lane displaced four residents and critically injured one man on Wednesday morning. The Ellsworth Fire Department responded to the structure fire shortly before 8:30 AM, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Firefighters arrived to find an active blaze at the multi-unit apartment building. One adult male suffered life-threatening burns and was initially transported to Northern Light Hospital in Ellsworth before being transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland for further treatment. All other residents were able to evacuate safely.

The fire was brought under control by 9:45 AM and fully extinguished by 10:30 AM. According to the Ellsworth Fire Department, the fire caused significant damage to the room where it originated, including the roof system, but the building is considered salvageable.

The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office conducted an origin and cause investigation, concluding that the fire was caused by the careless disposal of smoking materials. Officials continue to investigate the incident.

Fire departments from Trenton, Lamoine, Mariaville, Orland, Southwest Harbor, and Mount Desert Island assisted in extinguishing the fire. Our thoughts are with the injured man and those displaced by this incident.

Fire Safety and Prevention in Maine

Apartment fires, like the one at Meadow View Apartments, can have devastating effects on residents and their homes. Common causes include improper disposal of smoking materials, cooking accidents, and electrical malfunctions.

Fire safety experts recommend the following to minimize risks:

  • Properly extinguish smoking materials and dispose of them in fire-resistant containers.
  • Install and regularly check smoke detectors in all living areas.
  • Have a fire escape plan and practice it with family members.
  • Avoid overloading electrical outlets and using damaged cords.

Victims of fires may face emotional trauma, medical expenses, and challenges finding new housing. Community resources and legal assistance can help displaced individuals recover and rebuild.
