Cape Girardeau, MO (January 22, 2025) – A fatal head-on collision on Route B, one mile north of Millersville, resulted in the death of an 18-year-old driver and serious injuries to another individual. The tragic incident occurred at approximately 5:18 p.m. on Tuesday evening.

According to authorities, a southbound 2006 Ford Mustang, driven by an 18-year-old female from Patton, MO, crossed the centerline of the roadway and collided head-on with a northbound 2006 Chrysler Town and Country. The Chrysler was driven by a 58-year-old male from Oak Ridge, MO. Both vehicles sustained total damage and were removed from the scene by Cape County Towing.

Emergency responders pronounced the Ford Mustang’s driver deceased at the scene at 6:09 p.m., with Deputy Coroner Nick Miller present. She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Her remains were transported to the Cape Girardeau County Morgue. The Chrysler driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted by Air Evac to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis for advanced medical treatment.

Troop E has confirmed that this is the fourth fatality within its jurisdiction for 2025. The crash remains under investigation to determine any further contributing factors. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this incredibly difficult time.

Preventing Head-On Collisions in Missouri

Head-on collisions, like the tragic incident on Route B, often result in devastating consequences. In Missouri, such crashes frequently occur on rural roads where speed limits are higher, visibility is limited, and traffic control measures are sparse. Crossing the centerline is a common factor, whether due to distracted driving, impaired driving, or loss of control.

The Missouri Department of Transportation encourages drivers to adopt defensive driving habits to mitigate these risks. Key strategies include reducing speed on rural roads, staying alert to changing road conditions, and maintaining proper lane discipline at all times. Ensuring the use of seatbelts also plays a critical role in minimizing injury severity in the event of a collision.

For those affected by serious or fatal crashes, navigating the aftermath can be overwhelming. Between medical expenses, funeral arrangements, and potential legal complexities, the emotional and financial burdens can be immense. Families may find support by reaching out to local resources or consulting professionals who specialize in accident recovery.
