Troup, TX (January 22, 2025) – A fire engine responding to a mutual aid request for a structure fire in Cherokee County was involved in a single-vehicle rollover accident on FM 13, just outside of Troup, this morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:14 a.m. as Engine 146 from Smith County Emergency Services District 2 (ESD2) was en route to assist Cherokee County firefighters. While traveling along FM 13 near CR 4623, the fire engine overturned under circumstances still under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Emergency responders were quick to the scene, providing care to the two firefighters involved in the accident. Both individuals were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. One firefighter has since been discharged, while the other remains in treatment as of 2:45 p.m.

Smith County ESD2’s Support Services Department worked to clear the accident site and recover equipment. Law enforcement from DPS and local agencies also assisted in managing the scene and ensuring public safety. The exact cause of the rollover is under investigation, with Smith County ESD2 cooperating fully.

Our thoughts are with the injured firefighters as they recover from this unfortunate event.

Fire Truck Accidents in Texas

Emergency vehicle accidents, such as fire truck rollovers, highlight the challenges faced by first responders as they navigate to emergencies. Texas, with its vast road network and frequent calls for mutual aid, sees a notable number of incidents involving emergency vehicles each year. Factors such as high speeds, sharp turns, and shifting loads in apparatus like fire engines can increase the risk of rollovers.

Data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) indicates that accidents involving fire trucks often result in injuries not only to first responders but also to other motorists sharing the road. In Texas, strict safety protocols and continuous training aim to mitigate such risks, yet emergencies often require rapid responses that inherently carry higher risks.

To address these challenges, departments across Texas emphasize advanced driver training, maintenance of vehicles, and situational awareness. Public awareness campaigns also encourage motorists to yield to emergency vehicles, reducing the likelihood of collisions.
