Mountain Iron, MN (January 22, 2025) – A collision involving two vehicles occurred at the intersection of Highway 53 and Highway 135 (9th Street North) in Mountain Iron, St. Louis County, at approximately 5:21 PM on January 21, 2025.
Emergency responders, including the Virginia Police Department and Virginia Fire Department, quickly arrived at the scene to assist those involved. The incident involved a 2020 Toyota 4Runner and a 2017 Subaru Outback, both traveling northbound on Highway 53 when they collided at a traffic light.
The drivers of both vehicles sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Karen Marie Marchbanks, 59, of Ely, MN, was driving the Toyota 4Runner and was transported to Essentia in Virginia for treatment. Kayla Jo Pershern, 36, of Orr, MN, was behind the wheel of the Subaru Outback and was taken to Cook Hospital for medical care. Both drivers were reported to be wearing seat belts at the time of the collision, and airbags deployed in the Toyota 4Runner. Authorities confirmed that alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
The crash caused a temporary disruption at the intersection while emergency crews worked to clear the scene and assist the injured. The cause of the accident remains under investigation by local authorities.
